King’s was founded in 1955 by Clinton and Ruth Peterman, Don and Ann Edson, and several other families. They shared a vision to bring affordable Christian education to Christian families in the south Minneapolis area that was interdenominational in structure.

The first Board chair was S. Cook, Vice President of Northwestern Schools. Initially the group organized as Powderhorn Christian Society. All those with children in the school or contribute financially are considered members of the society. Minor decisions may be made by the Board of Trustees but, according to the bylaws, major decisions must be voted on by the Society at large.

The school was known as Powderhorn Christian School until 1994 when the name was changed to King’s Christian Academy.

There were approximately 100 students enrolled at KCA during the 2000-2001 school year. To our large ethnically diverse student population, we offer opportunities in choir, band, art basketball, foreign language, and summer school. There is a low student/teacher ratio with dedicated faculty that provide strong Christian role models. Our curriculum us Bible-based with a phonics/lit based reading program, along with daily Bible teaching and Chapel once a week. KCA believes in high academic standards with grades assigned on a percentage basis. Report cards are sent on a quarterly basis.

There are many events and student activities that are scheduled throughout the school year. They include, but are not limited to: Parents’ Back to School Night, Fall Open House, Christmas and Spring Concerts, Spiritual Emphasis Week, 7/8 grade missions trip to Mexico, basketball program, Grandparent’s Day, Pastor and Church Workers’ Lunch, Track and Field Day and competitions in spelling, math, science, speech, creative writing and music.

Additional information: KCA has been a member school of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) since 1979; and a member of the National Association of Street Schools (NASS) since 2000.
